WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS?

Human rights are the universal entitlements of all people. All human beings are inherently entitled to these rights irrespective of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or identity, disability, nationality, national or ethnic origin, colour, place of residence or any other status. Human rights are not bought or earned; people have them merely because they are human.

Human rights can be categorised as:

  1. Civil and political rights including the rights to life and liberty, freedom from torture, freedom of opinion and expression, and political participation.

  2. Economic, social and cultural rights including the rights to work, health, food, education and a reasonable standard of living.

  3. Collective or “third generation” rights including the right to live in a clean environment and right to cultural, economic and political development. The status of these latter rights in international law is unclear.
